Gavin O’Mahony scored three late points as Limerick ended Dublin’s All Ireland adventure in an exciting GAA All Ireland Quarter-final in Thurles on Sunday.
The Limerick wing-back finished with an impressive 0-8 haul, but his late flurry swung the game in the Treaty’s favour after Dublin had led for over an hour.
In the end, it was a lack of experience that cost Anthony Daly’s young charges, who betrayed nerves in a frenzied final ten minutes.
Dublin led by 1-3 to 0-1 after just nine minutes after Palmerstown’s Liam Rushe had found the net after 50 seconds.
Limerick were struggling with the pace of Dublin’s inside forward line in the opening exchanges, but O’Mahony was unerringly accurate from placed ball and his three frees kept them in touch.
Limerick’s burly full forward, Paudie McNamara, then found a crucial goal when he beat Tomás Brady to the ball, rounded the Dublin full-back and kicked the ball to the back of the net.
However, Dublin pulled ahead by three points thanks to scores from Michael Carton and two Alan McCrabbe frees giving them a 1-10 to 1-7 lead.
Limerick managed to level the game just before the break when goalkeeper Brian Murray rifled a penalty home after Paul Browne had been fouled.
Dublin hit the first two points of the second half, McCrabbe and Stephen Hiney on target for the men from the capital. O’Mahony, however, was really on his game and the first of his two glorious sideline efforts pegged Dublin back.
And Limerick began to take control of the game as the second half wore on, with Andrew O’Shaughnessy levelling the game at 2-13 to 1-16. James O’Brien landed a monstrous point from play on the hour mark to give Limerick the lead for the first time.
O’Shaughnessy and McCrabbe traded frees before O’Mahony all but guaranteed he would take home the Man of the Match award with three points in a row.
Dublin’s David O’Callaghan did have a late goal chance to set up a tense finish but Brian Murray saved his shot well at the near post and Limerick held out for a four-point win.
